Posting a story to theday.com via NCS Content#
This assumes your story is written and ready to be published and needs to be published immediately on the website. If you need to create a story from scratch, see 'Creating a story'
If your story is open and ready to go, hit 'Close & Save'; then find your story in the story list views (under the 'Reporter' or 'Editor' tab.) Use the date and category filters, if necessary, to narrow down the list and more easily find your story.
Once you've found the story, highlight it, right-click on it and select 'Edit properties'.
FIG. 1 – Right-click story and go to the ‘Edit properties …’ menu item.
The web properties tab may be laid-out or look differently on your screen than what appears in Figs. 1 & 2, but the same options should be available to all.
In the resulting window, click on the 'Web' properties tab and move/scroll down to the taxonomy section. Add taxonomy as necessary (including 'Breaking News' if you'd like the story to appear in the 'Latest Headlines' bucket on the home page. See Posting Breaking News.)
Start typing “Breaking” into the field below the taxonomy box and you’ll see “Custom > 0 Breaking News” appear (see FIG. 2). Double-click it to select it and add it into the taxonomy box. Repeat for other subject/descriptive taxonomies you are adding (and, you are adding them, correct?).
IF THE STORY WARRANTS IT, add either TopStory 1 or TopStory 2 taxonomy to get it to show up as one of the lead stories on the home page
While the web properties tab is open, check to make sure that the following options are set:
FIG. 2 – In the Web properties tab, select your taxonomy words and assure all other properties are correctly set.
- Comments is checked (unless the story is about sexual assault; you should discuss with an editor, if so).
- Paywall is set to Premium Content (unless it’s a matter of public safety or well-being; you should discuss with an editor, if so).
- Online Publication time is set to “immediately”.
Once these are done, click the "OK" button in the lower right corner to apply your changes; the window should close and leave you back in the list view with your story still selected/highlighted.
Now you’ll need to publish the story to web. Do so by clicking the “Publish” button in the upper right corner of the NCS story listing (see FIG. 3).
FIG. 3 – Click to ‘Publish’ button to send the story to the website.
The final step is making sure the story shows up on the home page or whatever section front if it's not going to be on the home page. To do that, you'll need to recache the home page. You can re-cache the home page via this URL: https://www.theday.com/&nocache=1
If the story is not going to be on the home page, but on some other section front, you'll need to re-cache that section front. (But remember, almost any newly-published story appears in its category bucket on the home page.) To re-cache the section front, navigate to it on the web site, let it finish loading then go up to the URL bar and add this to the end of the URL:
&nocache=1
NOTE: Please don’t overuse the recache link, as it can bog down the web server. I fyou find you have to recache several times to correct mistakes, please wait at least 3 minutes between recaches; and never do more than 2 recaches within 10 minutes.
