5. Adding taxonomy#

Taxonomy can do 2 things; add certain keywords to the story for SEO purposes, and place the story on certain page or in a certain spot on a page.

NOTE: All DayExtra stories must have the taxonomy term 'Day Extra' attached, so that should be your first order of business in adding taxonomy.

A Word about Taxonomy#

For stories to appear on the homepage of dayextra.com, you will need additional taxonomy. There are three "buckets" or areas on the home page, into which you can place stories. Click on the image at right to see these three areas depicted.

The three areas we'll describe thusly:

  • Main/Top 5 stories
    • Stories you want here need the taxonomy term New & Noteworthy (HP)
  • Right column (2 stories)
    • Stories you want here need the taxonomy term Content Box 1 (HP)
  • Bottom Grid (9 stories)
    • Stories you want here need the taxonomy term Homes Box 1 (HP)

Click on the "Keywords" tab in the story editor. Go down to the heading marked "Taxonomy" and click on the "Search" button. A pop-up window opens, where you will search for the taxonomy terms

FIG. 5a –

FIG. 5a – The Keywords tab is where you add taxonomy words, which are important for both placement on the DayExtra site and for SEO.

Adding Taxonomy is easiest by searching for your term. "Day Extra" is required for all DayExtra stories, so search for it, scroll through the list of results til you see it. Then select it and click "Add". (Fig. 5b, below) You'll need to repeat this process for each taxonomy word needed.

You should also add any other taxonomy terms you can find that match the subject of the story. For instance, if the story is about Mystic Seaport, you should search for and add any Mystic Seaport taxonomy terms. You do not have to add additional taxonomy, but it is highly advised that you do so. Including the "Day Extra" taxonomy, you should aim for 3 to 5 taxonomy terms per story.

6. Adding images#

If your story has a photo or mulitiple photos, you'll need to add them also.

NOTE: Before adding images, you should use Photoshop to resize them to web resolution (72 dpi) with the longest edge no larger than 1800 pixels.

Start by clicking on the "Pictures" tab, then clicking the "New Image" button, as shown in Fig. 6a, below. This will spawn a pop-up window.

FIG. 6a –

FIG. 6a – If a story has images, you will need to add them one-by-one

In the resulting pop-up (Fig. 6b, below), copy/paste the caption into the Caption box, then click "Choose File" and upload your image.

FIG. 6b –

FIG. 6b – The "Edit image" pop-up window. lets you upload an image and add a caption.

When you image is finished uploading, you will see it in the pop-up, as shown in Fig 6c, below. Click "Save" to attach the image to the story.

FIG. 6c –

FIG. 6c – This shows the "Edit image" pop-up after the image has uploaded. Click "Save" to save the image to the story.

After clicking Save, you'll see the image (and various "crops", which you can ignore); if your image is the sole one for the story, make sure the image type is "Main", as shown in Fig. 6d, below.

FIG. 6d – FIG. 6d – This shows the image, in the Pictures tab, after upload.

If there are more images with the story, repeat the upload process for each one. Stories should have mo more than 5 images. Fig. 6e, below, shows what subsequent images look like; all subsequent images should be changed to type "Extra image".

7. Saving and publishing the story.#

When you are done with adding images and you feel your story is ready to publish, go back to the "Properties" tag, review the publication date and category, then click "Save and close" in the upper right corner, as show in Fig. 7a, below. This both saves and closes the story and publishes it to the web (depending on publish date). You can pre-publisjh by setting a date in the future, then saving and closing. The story will automatically publish on the date you selected.

FIG. 7a – FIG. 7a – Save the sotry by clicking "Save and Close". This both saves and closes the story and publishes it to the web (depending on publish date).

If you are publishing the story immediately and you want to ensure it shows up immediately on the main page of DayExtra, you need to do one more thing.

Go to the DayExtra page and recache it:
